Two curators, one standard
Withnail & I began in 1998 as two friends — a dealer and a museum-trained curator — who spent weekends trawling country sales and whispering to each other, "the decent things never reach the open market." They were right: the best pieces traded privately, between people who knew each other, while the public browsed the remainder. So they built the network they were already operating informally: a members' club where vetted pieces circulate among people who care, with the provenance checked before the price is named.
How the network works
A team of in-house specialists covers furniture, ceramics, silver, tribal art, militaria, and twentieth-century design. Every piece offered through the network is examined and vetted — attribution checked, condition documented honestly, provenance traced as far as records allow — before it reaches a listing. Members get first refusal on thousands of pieces a year, typically days before anything appears publicly, and sellers reach the collectors most likely to steward their objects well. The result is a market that runs on trust: members in dozens of countries, including museum curators and lifelong dealers, who know that a piece offered here has already survived the hardest test — the eye of someone paid to be suspicious.
Membership
Membership is kept deliberately modest in size and vetted on application, because a network like this is only as good as the people in it. Fees fund the specialist team, not a marketplace of listings; nothing here is sold on commission disguised as curation.
