Chapter IV · The Forty-Seven-Point Review
The craft of the house, in five chapters.
Every accepted lot passes through five sequential stages and forty-seven individual checks before it reaches a member. We do not abbreviate the process for speed, and we do not publish a piece that has not been physically inspected by one of our specialists.

Consignment intake
A piece arrives from one of our 230+ UK estate executors, probate solicitors, or private vendors. Twelve points are logged at intake: provenance narrative, vendor declaration, photographic record, prior sale history, vendor relationship, indemnity terms, export status, CITES status (where relevant), condition on arrival, declared value, declared age, and any prior restoration.

No. 02
Specialist attribution
The piece is assigned to one of our fourteen in-house specialists — furniture, ceramics, silver, tribal, militaria, or 20th-century design. Attribution adds fourteen further points: maker, period, regional school, comparison examples, our internal comparable database, prior literature, marks, signatures, construction technique, joinery, materials analysis, patina assessment, repair history, and our confidence rating.

Physical inspection
The piece is unpacked, photographed under our standard lighting rig, and condition-graded by hand. Eleven points: structural integrity, surface condition, veneer or glaze state, joint soundness, drawer and door function, metalwork patina, textile condition (where present), upholstery state, pest or mould evidence, prior over-painting, and any cleaning required before sale.

Pricing & catalogue copy
A price is set against three comparables — our internal records, the most recent Holroyd-Pryce Index, and the open market. Six points: reserve price, public price, member-only price, commission structure, catalogue description in the house voice, and the condition disclaimer for the listing.

Dispatch to members
The lot is released to members with a 48-hour first-refusal window. Four final points: member alert issued, reservation logged, payment terms confirmed, and dispatch or collection arranged. Of 31,500 items offered in 2024, 11,970 reached this gate.

If your piece survives all forty-seven points, it earns a place in front of 4,820 members. If it does not, we tell you why, in writing, on the same day.
