What The Journal Is
The Quarterly Journal has been written, edited, and fact-checked by the same fourteen in-house specialists who handle Withnail & I's buying, condition reporting, and consignment pipeline since 1998. Every essay is grounded in a lot we have personally inspected, a provenance we have chased, or a market shift we have watched unfold in our 4,200 sq ft showroom on Cecil Court.
We do not commission freelance copy. We do not run advertorial. And we do not publish authentication opinions on items our team has not held — a line our specialists will not cross, and one members tell us, year after year, is the reason they renew.
Members of The Curators' Club receive the printed Journal four times a year by post, the full digital archive going back to Issue I (Spring 1998), and weekly dispatches from the specialists in between issues. Non-members may read selected essays below.

Horology · Provenance
A walnut longcase with a Robert Hogg dial turned up in a Lewes clearance last March, bearing a chalked inventory number from a 1923 dispersal. The chain of ownership back to the original Bury St Edmunds commission required seven deeds, one parish ledger, and a great deal of patience.

Two famille rose vases consigned from a Hampshire estate last summer carried every outward sign of a Qianlong-period court commission — except for the foot rim, the glaze pooling, and the iron-oxide halo under the reign mark. A cautionary note on what 47-point condition review actually checks.

A trio of Great War medals arrived with a 1920s photograph and a single line of family correspondence. The regimental number did the rest.

Five years of observation from the Cecil Court back room: a working reference library of dealer catalogues has become, in its own right, the most steadily appreciating segment of the British decorative-arts market — and the only one we will not attempt to put a number on.

Compiled and published each January by Margaret Holroyd and David Pryce, the Index is the Journal's standing reference work: median hammer and private-sale figures across 84 collecting categories, with year-on-year movement and a three-year trend. Cited by Bonhams and Dreweatts; circulated in print to Curators' Club members and to forty university libraries.
